The Mississippi Justice Project Presents
The Dedrick Jones Story
"Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them;..." (Heb. 13:3)
The world changed for Dedrick Jones in the late morning of October 22, 1997 when he was arrested and "taken down town for questioning".

Dedrick had been in trouble previously but actually did not expect to be held this time as he had done nothing wrong and thought that they would figure that out and let him go.

When he was arrested he was thoroughly searched and his hands were cuffed behind his back before he was put in the squad car. He was searched again, more completely, in the holding cell while being questioned. Again, nothing suspicious was found.

While he was being questioned, one of the team of arresting officers left the room for a few minutes and returned with a "baggie" containing some marijuana. He claimed to have found it "shoved up under the front seat" and said that it had to belong to Dedrick. He offered no opinion as to how Dedrick could have managed to retrieve it from it's hiding place and put it there while his hands were shackled behind him.

Dedrick believes that, because they had no reasonable cause to arrest him, in the first place they just felt that they had to invent something to cover their actions.

Two defense witnesses (they were present at the jail) were prepared to testify that no drugs were found on Dedrick when he was arrested  but, they were never called by his attorney. They are still prepared to give eye-witness statements in his defense if they are given the opportunity.
